Confabulation

Stories, true as we can tell them

Confabulation is a monthly storytelling event, based in Montreal and Victoria, where storytellers, amateur and professional alike, share real-life stories.

I’ve worked with Confabulation since 2019 as a story coach and event producer. I find and coach storytellers for our monthly live and virtual events, as well as teach workshops on storytelling.

01 Story coaching: shaping stories for impact

I work with storytellers from the community, helping them shape their stories until they feel ready to share them with the world.

What this looks like: I help storytellers find the *why* of their story i.e. why they’re choosing to share the story and the emotional impact they’d like to have on the audience. I then edit and structure their story, concluding the process with tips on performing in front of live and virtual audiences.

Impact

Through the process of coaching, I have empowered many amateur storytellers in sharing their stories and meaningfully connecting with diverse audiences.

02 Teaching storytelling: training the next generation of storytellers

I work with Confabulation’s education arm, StoryLab, to teach introductory workshops on storytelling.

These are 6-week courses where students gain a holistic overview of storytelling and learn how to successfully write, refine, and perform a story in front of live and virtual audiences.

Impact

My students have learned how to write, edit, and perform stories; how to offer and integrate feedback; and finally, how to apply storytelling techniques to deliver powerful presentations, pitches and more.

03 Performing stories: creating shared spaces of empathy

Through performing at Confabulation’s live and virtual shows, I have developed my ability as a public speaker and grown my skills as a storyteller.

Over the years, I have shared many personal stories, relating to the themes of love, loss, family, and friendship. Here are two of my favorites. I hope you enjoy them :)

Impact:

Performing personal narratives has taught me why stories are powerful. No matter how unique the experience being shared is, everyone can relate to the universal human emotions that underly a plot. This is what allows stories to create a space of empathy and shared understanding. I carry this knowledge with me and apply my skills as a storyteller to create similarly heart-centered experiences in all the work I do and the content I create.
